Since many Conservative Jews do not daven every day, and many do not have the background knowledge nor the encouragement or support to engage in Jewish ritual anywhere outside of the synagogue, many do not know the ins and outs, method, practice, words or tools used in daily Jewish ritual, nor do they know the meanings behind them. Many (maybe most) Conservative B’nei Mitzvah are given a tallit gadol as a gift, but very few are now presented with tefillin and instructed in their use, especially among the girls. Very few Conservative Jews wear a kippah outside of the synagogue, and almost none wear a tallit katan. The bedtime shema is rarely recited and even rarer are the brachot before and after each meal. These programs will be designed to open discussion of why we do (or do not) practice these rituals, and to explain the traditions and rationales behind them, as well as instruction in their practice. Even if one does not end up laying tefillin every day (or even ever again) every Jewish adult should at least know how.
